I SING THE BODY BIOENERGETIC
Energy – an overview from the perspectives of Western physiology and Eastern bioenergetics.
ENERGY
Energy – it’s the buzz word of the 21c, so let’s talk about it.
It’s the stuff that makes the world go round; that spins our wheels. In reality we need surprisingly little of it to maintain life and go about our daily business, the average person using the power equivalent of a l20 W light bulb for basic body maintenance. But right now, we’re in the midst of an energy crisis—both global and personal—that’s crippling the health and wealth of the state as well as many individuals. Essentially, energy is the currency of life. But, overspend your energy credit card and you’ll be flat broke. Exhausted. Too tired, too wired to think straight, to shoot straight. Moreover, chronic exhaustion is the mother of most all disease.
So, what’s the fix?
Surely, in order for us to recharge and revitalise all we need do is breathe, drink and eat well? Actually, no – it’s not that simple. To gain some insights about what makes you tick and what makes you sick, let’s consider energy from the perspectives of Western physiology and Eastern bioenergetics.
THE METABOLIC SYMPHONY
Every organism requires energy to fuel its activities. The biochemical processes involved in the maintenance of life are referred to as metabolism. Succinctly, the healthier the body, the more efficient the metabolism, and therefore the more energy the body has.
Metabolism is regulated by the organs and their associated hormones. The major players in the energy orchestra are the pancreas (produces insulin and glucagon hormones); liver (regulates blood sugar levels and acts as the hub for various metabolic processes); endocrine system (hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal thyroid, adrenals); kidney; adipose tissue (fat); and gastrointestinal tract.
Central to metabolism is the mighty mitochondrion. This ubiquitous organelle is the dynamo that powers the biochemical processes of life. The mitochondria catabolise the body’s fuel stores (lipids and ccarbohydrates) to create ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of the cell. ATP acts as a battery with a very short storage time that is recycled more than a thousand times a day. At any moment you have a mere 250 gms of this molecule, but in the course of a day you will generate your own body weight of ATP.
BIOELECTRIC CIRCUITRY
We obtain the fuel for metabolic energy primarily from sunlight, food, water and air. What these have in common is that they are a source of electrons (for the lack of which all biological activity ceases). Electrons are used by the body in a complex series of chemical reactions called the Electron Transport Chain, which relies on oxygen as the final electron acceptor in the chain. Simply put in bioenergy terms, we crave foods rich in electrons and we breathe oxygen to absorb those electrons, thereby completing the circuit.
Given that the flow of electrons is essential to life, the body may be viewed as a complex bio-electronic circuit. In this circuit, many electrodynamic and electrostatic mechanisms are at play and include: ionic; neural sheath DC (has a role in regeneration).; ferromagnetic; piezoelectric (as evidenced in the collagen matrix of bone); liquid crystal (pyramidal brain cells); digital (synaptic event registers/counters); bioluminescence; superconduction at room temperature; and biological semiconductors. However, life cannot be adequately described just in terms of biochemistry or bioelectricity, for these are purely a mechanistic descriptive of the processes that accompany life. As such, these processes may be viewed as the shadows that are cast by the light, but they reveal little about the nature of the light itself.
WELCOME TO THE BIOFIELD
The energies that vitalise you are not just due to internal processes, but are also derived from external sources. In effect, you’re a transceiver – you’re not just making waves (transmitting), you’re also receiving energy and info via the electro-magnetic spectrum. The reality is, you live, swim and surf in the waves of an ocean of radiant energy – terrestrial, celestial and artificial (man-made).
But wait, this is only a part of the energy equation – there are other forms of energy. Thus far we’ve only dwelt on the physical, however the body is not just a meat machine. Consider what Max Planck, a founding father of quantum physics had to say about energy: “all matter originates and exists only by virtue of a conscious and intelligent, non-visible, living energy force”.
BIOENERGY – ÉLAN VITAL
According to the precepts of the Eastern medical arts, there is a subtle energy that permeates living cells. This energy—variously known as ch’i, ki or prana—may be translated as ‘life force’. This life force is considered as being intelligent – in other words, it is encoded with, and conveys the information that creates, shapes, directs and sustains life.
Furthermore, this energy is conceptualised as flowing through a web of channels in a complex matrix that nourishes every cell in the body. Studies have revealed a fine network of tubules (~1µ diameter) along the path of the meridians. Analysis of fluid within these tubules reveals high concentrations of DNA, RNA, amino acids, hyaluronic acid, free nucleotides, adrenaline, corticosteroids, oestrogen and other hormonal substances. The presence of hormones suggests a link between the meridian system and endocrine glands.
Chinese meridian charts provide a valuable map of the human biofield, albeit one that is partial and somewhat antiquated, having progressed little over the last two millennia. Furthermore, the meridian system is overly rigid in that it assumes “one size fits all” or that the channels and points are fixed entities.
ENERGY BLOCKAGES
Life force may be generated, circulated, refined, conserved, transformed, and transmitted. However, any defect or blockage in the flow of bioenergy is the precursor of disease, disability and death. Blockages can be due to physical injury, physiologic malfunction involving the body’s organ systems, and/or emotional disturbance. The result of such is that affected organs and other body structures can be deficient in energy or have a surplus, both of which are deleterious conditions.
When energy cannot flow, it builds up, condenses, solidifies and becomes obstructive, thereby adding to the blockage and compounding the problem. Cancer is not just the result of cellular mutation, as cancerous cells can arise either from insufficient energy for a cell to sustain itself and grow, or from blockages that cause it to become overly energised, hard and aggressive.
A further consideration is that bioenergy fuels the growth of all life forms, not just our bodies. If it becomes blocked and cannot flow, other organisms can utilise that energy to feed themselves at our expense. The result of such is that our bodies become the host to microorganisms that feed on us, consume our energy and make us ill. This situation is analogous to the behaviour of water: when it flows it is clear, but when obstructed it becomes stagnant and toxic.
Bottom line – if you take care of your bioenergy, it will take care of you so that good health and wellbeing arise naturally. It really is as simple as that!
WELLSPRINGS OF ENERGY
We receive (and generate) energy using both external and internal sources.
EXTERNAL
The energy we receive from external sources is too raw for us to assimilate directly. So, it needs to be refined (in a fashion analogous to the refinement of crude oil to yield benzene) before we can utilise it. Various body organs are responsible for different aspects of this purification. Regardless of the input, the ability of the body to digest, process and circulate energy depends upon the prenatal energies. These act as a pilot light to fire up and regulate the metabolic and bioenergetic processes occurring within us.
For healthy functioning we require a healthy input: the more impure the input, the harder our system needs to work in order to purify it. Furthermore, regardless of how potent or pure the sources of our energies are, we need to be able to absorb and transform that energy into a form appropriate to our physical, metabolic and psychic needs. Accordingly, the processes of digestion, respiration, metabolism and circulation need to be strong and healthy.
INTERNAL
The internal sources of bioenergy have two manifestations: pre- and postnatal.
- Prenatal
Prenatal sources are the ones you were born with. These are constituted in part by the genetic inheritance you received from your parents, and that creates your body, shapes your mind and determines your metabolism or energy levels. In essence, this may be understood as seed energy. If the original seed is strong and properly cultivated, then it will grow in healthy fashion and sustain you through life. When the seed energy is exhausted death follows.
In addition, from heaven we receive the divine spark that lights our fire and inspires us in all that we do and are, and without which we are merely a meat machine.
- Postnatal
Postnatal sources depend upon the cultivation of internal and external energies throughout our lives. In other words, how we maintain and develop our sources. In this regard, it is instructive to view your life, your body and your creations as the manifestation of your seeds.
Whilst you’re unable to determine the nature and quality of the seeds that you received at conception; you certainly play an instrumental role in their cultivation during your life. It comes down to this: you are the caretaker of your divine and earthly garden. And taking care involves planting, harvesting, refining and storing. Guarding and preserving your bioenergy requires effort, care and vigilance, failing which your garden will become barren and a haven for weeds.
THE ENERGY CRISIS
Ok, we’ve broadly considered energy from the perspectives of Western and Eastern biomedicine. Now let’s focus on the issue of dealing with chronic fatigue, exhaustion and burnout. That is to say, what’s the fix – what do you have to do in order to recharge and revitalise yourself? The thing is, we are each unique, both in terms of our internal biochemical environment and the demands that the external world places upon us. Accordingly, it should come as no surprise that the causes, effects and remediation of energy depletion and exhaustion vary greatly from one person to another.
This variance in the symptoms confounds the medical profession, and as such there is little consensus as to the underlying organic causes. Imagine the following scenario: you feel flat, your get up and go got up and left some time ago, so that you are chronically tired and every little thing is a chore to do. So, you visit your doctor seeking a fix for your woes. Your doctors’ response will probably be (select one of the following options): a) rest up or take a holiday; b) we’ve run a physical checkup and everything seems A-OK, so the problem is all in your mind, or c) the tests reveal nothing in particular so we’re referring you to a host of specialists, each of whom will have a different name for what ails you.
In effect, there is a host of disabilities and diseases that leave us in a perpetual energy crisis. Edgar Cayce—one of the most extraordinary (and controversial) medical practitioners of the 20th Century—attributed exhaustion to factors such as poor elimination leading to toxicity and hyperacidity, glandular or immune dysfunction, or mental and spiritual fatigue. Various chemical causes have been proposed, including chronic inflammation, genetics, stress, and even viral links. A number of viruses have been proposed, but whether they are the triggers of the disease or a passenger has not been established.
From the Eastern perspective, the kidneys in association with the adrenal glands are the source of the body’s vital energies. Accordingly, the health status of the kidneys determines the energy status of body and spirit.
WHAT’S THE FIX?
Having gained an insight into the motive power of bioenergy is all well and good, but what about effective strategies to overcome exhaustion?
Re-energising—from a physiological perspective—is a whole-body process that involves factors such as diet, digestion, hormones, detoxing, stress levels, psychological issues, and oxygenation. Ultimately though, overcoming exhaustion and rejuvenation is not simply a matter of eating well and sleeping better. Accordingly, I have created a program (the Kinergy Energy Master Key) specifically for re-energising and overcoming exhaustion.
WHAT IS KINERGY, ANYWAY?
Kinergy is a unique modality that deals directly with energy. It integrates the best clinically-validated metabolic and neuromuscular conditioning strategies—Western and Eastern—into programs attuned to modern day lifestyles.
And there’s more. Physical exercise is only one component of this method. In effect, Kinergy is a multimodal “school for life” program that includes modules on nutrition, ergonomics, motivation, goal setting, improving cognitive skills, and enhancing awareness.
I will conclude this article with the message that I exhort my clients with:
the keys to health, sanity and serenity are simple — take care of the energy and the energy will take care of you!
